FAQ with respect to intake onto programme in September 2007
Q. What are the academic entry requirements?
A. Applicants are expected to have an honours degree (level 8) in Computing (Grade2.2 or better) or equivalent.
Q. What will the timetable look like?
A. You normally take two modules each semester.Three modules will be on offer for the Winter 2007/2008 i.e. September to December 2007. Classes run from 6:30pm – 9:30pm . Each module will run on a different night of the week.
Q. What is a semester?
A. A 15 week period of study i.e. Winter Semester: September to December, Spring Semester: February to May – this part-time programme will involve 4 semesters of taught modules and a dissertation
Q. How many modules will I study?
A. 2 modules per semester are envisaged for part-time students but additional modules may be offered to part-time students wishing to complete the programme in a shorter timeframe. Students need to take 8 of the 10 modules on offer to complete the taught component of the programme
Q. What is the latest date for acceptance of applications?
A. Friday 7th September, 2007, applications may be accepted afterwards but places are limited and will be filled on a first come first served basis.
Q. How long will it take to complete the M.Sc. in part-time mode?
A. Normally the programme takes 2 years to complete in part-time mode i.e. September 2009 would be the finish date for students starting in September 2007 i.e. 4 semesters of taught modules (taking 2 modules each semester) & dissertation
Q. What’s the dissertation?
A. A piece of applied research and a write up in a mini-thesis to be completed before the end of the programme. Research projects will be proposed by the programme board in the first instance. You may suggest a project idea of your own, subject to its acceptance by the programme board.
Q. What modules are available in February 2007 and thereafter?
A. It depends on demand – at most one of the mandatory modules per semester and the most popular of the non-mandatory modules:

Winter Semester 07/08: Network Security and Forensic Computing, Cooperating Systems and the Semantic Web, Strategic Management and Financ,
Spring Semester 08: Scalable Computing, Advanced Software Development Technologies
Winter Semester 08/09: Network Analysis and Design, Software Process Management
Spring Semester 09: Mobile Applications Design and Development, Simulation and Visualisation, Technology Law
Q. How much are the fees for this course for EU students?
A. The total fee for the complete course is €4,000, normally made in 3 stage payments i.e. €1,500 at the start, with payments of €1,500 and €1,000 to follow. 3rd level fees are tax deductible. €500 of the total fee is to cover training ‘bootcamps’. Stage payments can be broken down further, at the discretion of the finance office.
Q. How much are the fees for this course for non-EU students?
A. The total fee for the complete course is €24,000 normally made in 3 stage payments i.e. €9,000 at the start, with payments of €9,000 and €6,000 to follow. Stage payments can be broken down further, at the discretion of the finance office.
Q. Will there be course induction sessions?
A. Yes – throughout the course as necessary.
Q. When will teaching actually start?
A. Provisionally, Monday 17th September, but induction programmes may run in advance of them.
Q. How do I get on the course?
A. Fill in the application form (available on the web site), send it in, and attend for a short interview if requested.
Q. Is this course available in full-time mode?
A. Not just yet, but the intention is to offer it in full-time mode in which case it would involve 2 days of classes per week and would be capable of bring completed in one calendar year
