Gravity defied
When you hurtle down the runway on your low-fare flight to Paris are you almost surprised when the plane defies the law of gravity and lifts off?
Since the days of the Wright brothers aerospace engineers have been solving problem after problem about the interaction of wind, materials and speed and have been applying their discoveries to plane design and manufacture. It’s a mechanical engineering story of world significance.

Communications and Guidance Systems
The onboard communications and guidance systems are the inventions of the electronic and communications engineers. Landing in fog is not the problem it once was. The plane can fly ‘blind’ thanks to the wizardry of the electronic engineers.
Design and Manufacturing
It’s the job of the design and manufacturing engineers to convert the blueprint into a production master-plan and an assembly line process that employs robots with a hundred electronic hands and precision tools that are calibrated to do jobs of unbelievable delicacy. Finally, quality control systems, at every point of production, guarantee that the plane rolled out onto the runway meets exceptionally rigorous engineering standards. Thank the manufacturing engineers for your comfortable flight.
ITT Dublin Engineers
We educate engineers in ITT Dublin – electronic engineers, telecommunications engineers, mechanical engineers, network engineers, software engineers, manufacturing engineers, electro-mechanical engineers. They are part of that group of creators, inventors and problemsolvers who constantly surprise us with the creativity of their problem-solving, the capability of their machines and the wonders of their electronic systems.
Engineers are in demand
Apart from the wonder of what they do, the expertise of our engineers are very much in demand whether in electronics, mechanical or manufacturing and they are well paid for their knowledge and skills. That shouldn’t be a surprise because in ITT Dublin we plan programmes with an eye to the job market. Employability is an important focus with us. We talk to the international engineering giants located around us about their needs and challenges. Our programmes reflect the agenda of that greater engineering world. It makes the step between Institute and workplace very smooth. We like our students to explore, in assignments and in the laboratory, the engineering challenges that lie ahead.
Professional Membership
Along with the engineering awards and qualifications in ITT Dublin you may become a member of The Institution of Engineers of Ireland. It is the professional body for engineers. Being a chartered member of the Institution ranks the ITT Dublin engineer with other professionals – doctors, accountants, architects and teachers.
Opportunities for women
When asked, the vast majority of Irish women engineers agree that their career is challenging, personally rewarding and exciting. Engineering is a very people-centred discipline, which involves working within teams, with clients and with other
professionals. Engineers find practical solutions to real problems – something women have been doing for generations. Engineering projects impact directly in a very positive way on the quality of life of others and bring opportunities to
influence the world of tomorrow – the technology, the employment and the lifestyles of the future. An engineering qualification opens doors to good financial reward. ITT Dublin is the home of two national support and networking groups for female engineering students and graduates - Minerva and Mentorlink. (www.mentorlink.ie)
