Biography
Dr. Joe MacDonagh is a Chartered Psychologist who lectures in the Department of Management. He holds a PhD from UCC, and a Masters degree, by research, from UCD. He graduated with his honours primary degree in pure psychology from UCD. He was also awarded a graduate diploma in statistics from Trinity College Dublin, where he has been a part-time lecturer in the Faculty of Health Sciences and in the Department of Paediatrics. Prior to this he lectured in DIT’s College of Marketing.
Institutional Involvement
Dr. MacDonagh is a former Vice-Chairman of ITT Dublin’s Academic Council and also served on the Institute’s Research Ethics committee. At present he is a member of the Institute’s Estates Committee and Marketing Group.
Research Interests
Dr. MacDonagh’s main academic interests are in the areas of occupational psychology, qualitative research methodologies, and the dialogical/relational construction of identities.
Professional Memberships
Professionally, Dr. MacDonagh is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and is a former President of the Psychological Society of Ireland (2003-2004). As President of the PSI he was an ex officio member of the Presidents’ Council of the European Federation of Psychology Associations (2003-2004).
Dr. MacDonagh is a member of the History and Philosophy of Psychology and the Qualitative Methods in Psychology sections of the BPS, in addition to attending and presenting research at the Division of Occupational Psychology’s annual conference. He is also an Associate member of the American Psychological Association (APA)
Dr. MacDonagh is a Council member of the Irish Academy of Management (IAM), and is Chair of the Council’s Awards sub-committee.
Dr. MacDonagh is a member of the International Society for Cultural and Activity Research (ISCAR), a predominantly academic organisation that holds conferences and publishes journals around areas including work context and how workers and organisations mutually co-construct each other.
Finally, Dr. MacDonagh is a Chartered Scientist of the Science Council of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
